Sleeping beauty

A co-produciton of the National Dance Theatre.

Everyone knows Sleeping Beauty, whether from the story of the Brothers Grimm, the Tchaikovsky ballet or the Walt Disney cartoon adaptation. However, looking behind the sweet figure of the almond eyed little girl, there is a less charming story revealing itself: the first blood, the hibernated girl, the sleeping court, the threat of the prick from the spindle, the alarming images of a dream that seems like eternity, the bewilderment on waking from a hundread-year-logn coma, and waiting for a kiss that could save the world from emotions becoming bland. To fall asleep in the age of romanticism and awake in the 21st century. It is a frightening possibility. A classic tale the way we have never before seen it. Dreams, desires, sexuality: or let us look behind things in case a beauty is asleep there.
The original version appeared in 1967 written by Charles Perrault. Tchaikovsky wrote his ballet in 1889. 120 years ago. Time to wake up!
