Béla Bartók's orchestral Dance Suite was written for the event which has entered music history, the concert held in Budapest in 1923 by the Municipality of Budapest to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the merger of Pest and Buda. It was for the same gala concert that Ernő Dohnányi composed his Festive Overture and Zoltán Kodály the Psalmus Hungaricus.
... listening to the work we constantly meet dance melodies radiating the pure, inimitable air of folk music. But without exception these melodies are the composer's own invention and it was thanks to his intimate knowledge of folksongs that Bartók was able to compose them.
