Odette, the beautiful princess lives as an echanted swan with her friends by the lake. The evil Rothbart's curse keeps them in this state, that only the boon of true love can lift. Until this happens the swans can only take the form of their former human selves from midnight to dawn. Sigfried, the young prince is hunting in the forest with his band of friends. In fact he has the graceful swan in his sights, when the clock hits midnight and Odette wins back her original human form. She explains her predicament to the prince. They fall in love at once. Odilia, the wizard's daughter is watching the loving couple jelously. Dawn is near: Odette and Sigfried must bid farewell from one another until midnight. Odilia asks her father for help: She wants to take the form of Odette to win over the love of the Prince. Rothbart does as she asks. The next day bridal candidates arrive for Sigfried, but at this point his heart only beats for Odette. Odilia makes her presence as Odette. Sigfried realizes the ruse and follows his love to the lake. Rothbart also makes his way to the lake to hinder the lovers' meeting. But the swans come together to foil Rothbart's attempt. Sigfried vows his eternal love to Odette and breaks the curse: The swans win back their human forms.
